Take A Walk On The Southern Side
Walking Through Living History-Tours of Homes, Gardens, Historic Places. Just like Sunday afternoon walks in the old days-stopping by to say hello or to sip a glass of sweet tea on the porch. Meander down historic Florence streets, peek into families' lives from the past, step onto floors polished by generations. Hear tales of young husbands riding off to war, boisterous Christmases, children playing hide and seek under the stairs. Of mothers washing clothes in backyard iron kettles, silver-haired women stitching quilts for young brides, embattled men-finally- welcomed home from war by children they've never seen.
Guided tours are offered each Saturday in June and self guided tour brochures are available from the Florence/Lauderdale Tourism Office.
Wood Avenue District
One of the most popular tours with classic Queen Annes, Georgian Revival, Craftsman Bungalows, and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. Two elegant bed and breakfasts with Southern grace and charm.
Florence City Cemetery Tour
Governors, Confederate soldiers, unknown Union soldiers, politicians, their wives, some of their children-all lay side by side in this 1818 cemetery with lots of history. Interesting to wander among the unique headstones, remembering the valiant, imagining the life stories lost to time.
Forks of Cypress Plantation & Cemetery Tour
One of the first plantation homes in America completely surrounded by columns that stand today as ghostly reminders of the once magnificent home destroyed by fire in 1966. The early plantation was built in 1822, and a tour of the private site includes the family cemetery where the original owner is buried.
