Young Learners Series:Mussels
The Florence Indian Mound Museum, through its partnership with the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area, is hosting a series of children’s activities that help students to investigate the early culture of the Shoals through interactive learning. These programs will cover a wide range of topics; they are suitable for an elementary level age group; will focus on Native American history and culture; and will have a creative component, which will engage students in hands-on learning. All events are free.
Our program on Freshwater Mussels will take place Saturday, June 15th at 10 am. This learning exercise will explore how Native Americans in the Shoals area used freshwater mussels from the Tennessee River. Students will help to make a biome exhibit that will stay here at the museum, and also have an opportunity to make a necklace to bring home. The biome exhibit will be added to in the coming months as we explore different topics related to the Tennessee River.
