The Pope’s Tavern Speaker Series features presentations about Florence’s early history, from settlement through the Civil War. There will be ten presentations in the first series, spanning December through June.
On February 20th, 2020 at 6pm, Dr. Julia Bernier will deliver her presentation, “The ‘Dawn of Freedom’: Experiencing Emancipation in the post-Civil War South.” Dr. Bernier is Assistant Professor of History and Black Studies at the University of North Alabama. She received her PhD in African American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2017. Her work focuses on African Americans’ experiences and interactions with slavery and abolition. Her current book project examines self-purchase in the antebellum United States.

This event is the fifth in a series of presentations that will be held at Pope’s Tavern, 203 Hermitage Drive, Florence Alabama. The series is sponsored by Florence Arts and Museums and is free. Call 256-760-6439 for more information.
