Preservation Florence: McFarland Heights--Designing Segregation

This event has expired and is here for your information.

Historian Brian Murphy will give a presentation about the McFarland Heights Historic District, Florence's newest district in the National Register of Historic Places. McFarland Heights set the precedent in Florence for white suburban developments. This presentation will examine the development of the McFarland Heights neighborhood--designed for white people--alongside the development of the Handy Heights neighborhood--designed for African Americans and look at the impact that historical housing policies have had on our community.
